Jed the Amish Intern speaks his mind
So far, Jed is our favorite intern. Jed showed me the following links, and taught me a great way to search using Google. I’m not sure how he learned about the information superhighway, but I digress:
Amish Etiquette Dos and Don’ts
Amish Recipes & Cooking
How the Amish Celebrate the Holidays
Clipped:
…loyalty to tradition is never more obvious than at holiday time. In their observance of Thanksgiving and Christmas, the Amish remain faithful to the original purpose of the season, and center their celebration around family, church and friends.
“Over the river and through the woods, to Grandmother¹s house we go” are not just the words of a classic holiday song; they are literally true for many Amish families on Thanksgiving. Children are bundled up in a buggy (or even a sleigh, if the amount of snow permits) and the whole family joins the extended family gathered at the “dawdy haus” (Grandpa house). Grandmother has been baking pies and bread for the last two or three days, and each daughter or daughter-in-law has brought her contribution in the form of salads, vegetables and desserts. The roast turkey on the table may very well have been tracked down in the woods by an uncle or brother, and the ham or roast beef probably comes from a pig or steer that was living in the barn until a few weeks ago.
While the women are preparing Thanksgiving dinner, the men will often pitch in to do some chores for Mom and Dad — splitting and stacking wood for the stove, or helping clean out the barn…” {link}
